LASIK
— IS IT FOR YOU
?

Laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) is a surgical procedure to reduce nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia) and astigmatism by reshaping the cornea, the clear covering of the front of the eye. In LASIK, an automated device called a microkeratome is used to create a thin flap in the cornea that is lifted; an excimer laser is then used to reshape the underlying corneal tissue and the flap is replaced over the treated area.

Is LASIK Safe
?

In January 2002, the American Academy of Ophthalmology found that LASIK is safe and effective for correcting farsightedness, nearsightedness and astigmatism. More than 5 million procedures have been performed in the United States. Your doctor should talk to you about the possible risks and side effects of LASIK. It is important to consider how LASIK will change your visual lifestyle after surgery. Your doctor will carefully consider and help you to choose your visual outcomes after surgery.

Who Shouldn’t Have LASIK?

LASIK is an excellent procedure for many. Your eye doctor will examine you and tell you if you are a candidate. Those who are not good candidates should not have the surgery. If you have any of the following conditions, you may not be a good candidate for LASIK: Some of these risk factors are:

Uncontrolled or advanced glaucoma

Pregnant or breastfeeding

Diabetes, some extreme cases

Use of Prednisone pills or drops

Dry eyes

Pupil size over seven millimeters

Genetic or metabolic problems affecting the cornea

Warped* (kerataconus) or thin corneas.  If you wear contact lenses, especially rigid lenses, before performing LASIK your doctor will examine you using a series of measurements to see if your corneas are warped. Your eye doctor may ask you to remove your rigid contact lenses for several weeks or months, and soft contact lenses for several days or weeks prior to examination to allow your cornea to return to its normal shape.

What Should I Do
   If I’m Considering LASIK?

Make an appointment with Dr. Jeffrey Reisch or Dr. Mark Gendal {954-753-1100} to determine if you are a good candidate for the procedure. We will perform a series of tests to determine if you qualify for LASIK. A thorough discussion of all of your options and what to expect in terms of your outcome will take place.

If you decide to have LASIK You will love it!!!!!
